Questions and answers

Everything you want to know about sheet metal

Answers to the questions we are asked most — about sheet metal, processing, colours and installation.

Sheet metal and roofs

Which sheet do I need?

  • Which sheet is best for my roof?

It depends on the roof pitch, the structure, the use, the way it is installed and the weather. There is no single type of sheet that suits every roof.

  • What is the difference between galvanized and pre-painted sheet?

Galvanized sheet is protected by zinc, while pre-painted sheet has an additional decorative and protective layer. Galvanized sheet is most often used for gutters and flashings, pre-painted sheet for roofs, facades, fences and metal cladding. The choice depends on the use and the look your project calls for.

  • What is cold-rolled sheet used for?

Cold-rolled sheet is a material meant for further processing and for making various sheet-metal products and structures, such as flashings, ventilation ducts and metal housings.

  • What do TR35/200 and TR18/227 mean?

These are designations for different sheet profiles. The designation describes the profile and its dimensions, not the thickness of the sheet.

  • Can sheet metal also be used for a facade?

Yes. Sheet can also be used as a facade solution, depending on the type of sheet, the profile and the specific application.

  • Why does condensation appear on some roofs?

Condensation appears when warm, humid air meets a cold surface. Most often the problem is insufficient insulation and large temperature changes. That is why we apply anti-condensation felt.

Choosing a material

What is the difference?

  • Why do two sheets of the same thickness not cost the same?

Thickness is only one factor. The type of material, the protective coating, the manufacturer, the profile and the structure itself also have an effect.

  • What matters more – the thickness or the quality of the protective coating?

They should not be looked at separately. The choice of material should take into account the thickness, the type of material, the protective coating (the pre-painted coating) and the conditions it will be used in.

  • Is a more expensive sheet always a better one?

Not always. The price is set by the material, the protective coating and the manufacturer, but the real value is in how well the sheet suits the purpose of your project.

  • Why do some sheets keep their colour for years while others fade?

The difference is most often in the type and quality of the pre-painted coating, and in exposure to sun, moisture and pollution. Not all coatings are equally resistant to UV radiation and weather.

My project

What do I need?

  • I have a roof project. Where do I start?

Start by measuring the roof and establishing its structure and pitch. Then define the dimensions you need, the type of roof sheet and the colour you prefer. If you have a project or a sketch, send it to us together with the dimensions. Our team will help you work out the materials, the additional elements and the quantities your roof needs.

  • What do I need to measure before ordering sheet metal?

You need the dimensions and area of the roof, its angles, overhangs and additional elements such as chimneys, roof windows and the like.

  • I only have the roof dimensions. Is that enough?

That is a good start, but for a precise quote we also need further information about the structure, the profile and the roof details.

  • Can you make sheet metal to my dimensions?

Yes. Rima Stil offers processing and fabrication to your specification, depending on the request.

  • Can I bring you project plans or a drawing?

Yes. Project plans or a specification can help us understand your needs better and prepare a quote.

Processing

What can you make?

  • Can you cut the sheet to size for me?

Yes, we cut sheet on a cross-cutting shear, from 0.3 to 4 mm, to the specification you need.

  • Can the sheet be bent to suit my project?

Yes, bending is done on a press brake for sheet up to 0.7 mm thick and up to 8 m long, and lets us make elements to the dimensions and shape you specify.

  • What are flashings and why do I need them?

Flashings are sheet-metal elements fitted at the joins, edges and transitions of the roof, and around chimneys, walls and other parts of the building. They cover the critical spots and help keep water out.

  • Can you make flashings to measure?

Yes. Flashings can be made to the dimensions and specification you need.

  • Can you apply anti-condensation felt?

Rima Stil offers machine application of anti-condensation felt as part of the processing of the sheet.

Products

Can I find everything for my project?

Sandwich panels

  • Do I need a roof or a facade panel?

Roof and facade sandwich panels differ in their purpose and how they are used. Roof panels are meant for covering buildings, while facade panels are used to build the outer walls. The choice depends on the part of the building to be covered, the structure and the insulation requirements. The thickness and the specification of the panel also need to be taken into account.

  • How do I choose a panel?

What matters most is the purpose, the dimensions and the characteristics the building needs. Our team can help you choose the right solution.

  • What panel thicknesses do you have?

The range includes panels 30 and 50 mm thick, and thicker panels are made to order. The technical specifications must be confirmed when the quote is prepared.

Fences

  • What kind of fence can I have made?

Rima Stil offers a roller-shutter fence and a pre-painted sheet fence, with different designs possible to suit the needs of your project.

  • Can the fence come in a colour?

Yes. For the pre-painted sheet fence, the available colours and designs depend on the current range. Choose the variant you want and ask for a quote.

  • Can you make it to measure?

Yes. The roller-shutter fence is made to your specification, i.e. to your project’s needs and dimensions.

Flashings

  • Why do I need flashings?

Flashings are sheet-metal elements fitted at the joins, edges and transitions of the roof, and around chimneys, walls and other parts of the building. They cover the critical spots and help keep water out.

  • Can you make them to measure?

Yes. Rima Stil makes flashings to your specification. It is best to send dimensions, a drawing or project plans so that a suitable solution can be prepared.

Gutters

  • What do gutters actually do?

Gutters collect the water from rain and melting snow on the roof and direct it to the downpipes, instead of the water running straight down the facade.

  • What do I need for a complete gutter system?

The horizontal gutter alone is not enough. The system consists of horizontal gutters, vertical downpipes and accompanying elements such as corners, bends, end pieces and joints.

  • How do I know which gutter size I need?

The size is not chosen by the length of the gutter alone. The area and pitch of the roof, the amount of rainfall and the number and position of the downpipes are taken into account.

  • Can the gutters be matched to the roof?

Yes. Gutters can be chosen so that their shape and colour fit the roof and the building.

Fittings

  • What exactly are “fittings”?

Fittings are the accompanying elements needed to complete the roof and the drainage system — not one specific product, but several different elements.

  • Which fittings do I need for the gutters?

Depending on the system, these include elements such as brackets, end caps, connectors, corners and other parts needed to join and fit the gutters properly.

  • Can I buy everything for the roof at Rima Stil?

Rima Stil offers gutters, fittings, flashings and other roofing products, so the elements you need can be looked at as one complete solution for your roof.

Metal cladding

  • What exactly is metal cladding?

Metal cladding is profiled sheet shaped like lining boards, most often used as a finishing element for cladding and protecting certain parts of the building.

  • Where is metal cladding used?

It is most often used for eaves and for cladding parts of the building, where a tidy finished look matters as well as function.

  • Can metal cladding come in a colour?

Yes. Metal cladding can be made from pre-painted sheet, so the choice of colour depends on the variants of the sheet available.

Colour and shape

What will it look like?

  • I have a colour in mind. Can I find it among your colours?

Rima Stil offers a choice of colours from the range available, so you can match the look of the roof or the building to your project.

  • How many colours do you have?

We have a choice of over 20 colours, from the range available. Here are some of them:

    • RAL 9006White aluminium
    • RAL 7016Anthracite grey
    • RAL 3009Oxide red
    • RAL 8019Grey brown
    • RAL 8017Chocolate brown
    • RAL 9002Grey white
    • RAL 6028Pine green
    • RAL 9005Jet black
    • RAL 5010Gentian blue
  • Can I see what the colour looks like in person?

Yes. It is best to look at the colour on a real sample, because a screen cannot fully show the true shade.

Renovation and installation

How do I get it installed properly?

  • Can new sheet metal be laid over an old roof?

In certain cases it can, but it depends on the condition of the existing roof and the structure. The specific building needs to be assessed before a decision is made.

  • Can I install the roof sheet myself?

On smaller, simpler structures it is possible, but professional installation matters to avoid mistakes and leaks. We handle the whole job, from the order to the installation.

  • Can good sheet leak if it is badly installed?

Yes. The quality of the material is not enough if the installation and the finishing elements are not done properly.

  • What happens if the sheet is not fastened properly?

It can lead to vibration, water getting in, damage to the pre-painted coating and even the sheet lifting in a strong wind. That is why the right screws and professional installation matter.
